Romeo and Juliet (2016)

In March 2017, audiences were invited to explore the world of Romeo and Juliet in a way they never had before. A fully promenade, fully immersive production of the world’s most famous love story, the audience were swept up in the questions of gender, sexuality and love that surrounds our star crossed lovers. What you see is up to you. But what you don’t see…

Taking place in a nightclub en promenade, this production split the audience in to Montagues and Capulets, creating their allegiances for them from the very beginning. Separated for the beginning of the show, a divide between the two performance spaces opens during the infamous ballroom scene. The audience are were then welcome to move freely, exploring the story as it barrels towards its tragic conclusion in any way they see fit.

Every choice they make had an impact. With multiple scenes occurring at the same time, they decided what they saw and what they missed – and so how much of the story they really understood.

Casting Romeo, Tybalt, and Friar Lawrence as women, this production explored how we create pre-concieved understandings of gender and sexuality, and how these affect the LGBTQ+ community.
